Country Haven Sourdough

Welcome! I’m Renee—mom of two incredible humans, Nonnie to three ridiculously cute grandbabies, and wife to my best friend and real-life soulmate (yes, those do exist—and mine even does the dishes).

In 2019, we decided to trade California traffic for South Dakota sunsets—and honestly, we’ve never looked back. These days, we call a little patch of peace and big sky country our Country Haven—where life feels a little slower and a lot sweeter. We share it with five “hunting dogs” who mostly just hunt for treats and belly rubs. Basically, we live in a fur-filled, biscuit-fueled sitcom.

Life out here gave me the space to slow down and finally chase the dreams I used to put on the “someday” shelf. One of those was writing a novel—and guess what? I did it! It only took two years, a lot of caffeine, and a few emotional meltdowns, but when I held that finished book in my hands? Cue the happy tears and a victory dance that no one should ever have to witness.

Now, baking sourdough? That was a happy accident. I was just dabbling… then suddenly I was elbows deep in flour, hoarding bannetons, and naming my starter like it was my sixth child. What started as a curiosity turned into an obsession—and now, I can’t imagine not baking. There’s just something magical about turning three simple ingredients—water, flour, and salt—into crusty, golden perfection (and honestly, you haven’t lived until you’ve had to explain to someone that your fridge is full because of “bulk fermentation”).

My husband and I both still work full time, but we’re already dreaming of the days when we can slow down for good. At the top of our retirement wish list? Hitting the road to visit all our kids and grandkids (we’ve officially entered the “frequent flyer grandparent” phase of life). And for me? I’d love to spend even more time in the kitchen, maybe even turn this sourdough passion into a cozy little micro-bakery right here in our haven. Too crazy? Or just crazy enough?

Thanks for being here. I hope you’ll explore my recipes, share in the stories, and maybe find some inspiration to chase your own dreams—whether it’s baking your first loaf of bread or writing your first chapter.

From my Country Haven to yours,
Renee
